The CETA works to provide skills development initiatives for the advancement of the construction sector of South Africa. It also functions as an implementing body of the National Skills Development Strategy. Another function of the CETA is to make sure that the South African people are equipped with scarce or critical skills to further the capacity of the construction sector.
CETA-Thapelo Madibeng Bursary 2021
The CETA’s Thapelo Madibeng Bursary Programme is available to students taking up construction-related studies at the undergraduate or post-graduate level (Master’s degree studies). The bursary award amounts up to R120 000 per year, per beneficiary, and will cover expenses such as:
- Book fees
- Meal and accommodation
- Registration fees
- Tuition fees
- Any other necessary support in aid of completing the qualification
- Other costs such as printing, research, and fieldwork expenses will be covered at the CETA’s discretion
Bursary support is available to students pursuing a suitable degree at a recognized public university, TVET college, or universities of technology. Below is a quick list of recognized qualifications:

- BSc Civil Engineering
- BSc Construction Management, Economics, or Studies
- BSc Geomatics
- BSc Property Development
- BSc Urban and Regional Planning

TVET colleges
- NCV (Lv 2-4) Electrical Infrastructure Construction

Who should apply?
Candidates must meet these minimum qualification requirements to apply::
- Must be an undergraduate or postgraduate student currently pursuing recognized qualification relevant to the construction sector
- Must not be current beneficiaries of NSFAS or any other funding programmes
- Immediate family members of CETA employees are not allowed to apply
- Must not be older than 35 years old
What is the selection process?
The CETA will consider applications that meet the minimum eligibility requirements. Prospective beneficiaries must also be able to achieve their school’s academic pass mark. Applications from people who are from a designated group will be given priority
How do I apply?
Eligible applicants who wish to apply for bursary support will need to prepare the following support documents:
- Certified copies of the following:
- SA identity documents
- Proof of income of parents/ guardian (last 3 payslips)
- Approved bank statements within the last six months
- For unemployed parents/guardian, an affidavit stating such status
- Admission letter from the tertiary institution
- For university students, a full academic history
- Applicants graduating from matric will need to submit their academic results for 2020
